Having Finished Elite Bloonarius, I Have Some Thoughts Posted: 27 Jul 2021 09:55 PM PDT Boss Bloons are really cool ideas, and I'm glad to see them return. Based on their first outing, I'd say that normal is about where we want it to be: decently challenging, but not so difficult as to be nigh impossible. Elite, on the other hand, is an utter nightmare. Fighting Elite Bloonarius reminded me of higher levels of difficulty in certain FPS games where the only thing that really changes is how much health the enemies have, which results in the bullet sponge phenomenon of "wow I've shot this enemy 5 times more in the head than I did on normal and it's still going what'm I doing with my life". This is especially noticeable on Tiers 4 and 5 Bloonarius, with 8 million and 40 million health, respectively. Because each tier must be defeated in 20 rounds or less, your defence has to be good enough to output a minimum of 400,000 damage per round by round 100, and 2 million damage per round by round 120. This means you have two "options" for dealing with Bloonarius: get a fully maxed out VTSG by round 100 (preferably earlier) with the temple from the previous tier having maxed out Primary, Military, and Magic upgrades while also buffing it with Perma-Brew, Ultraboost, x5x Glue Gunner, 5xx Ice Towers, 5xx Snipers, and 250 + 240 villages (throw in a portable lake with an Energizer in it for some bonus CDR, why not) so it produces the maximum damage it possibly can while then proceeding to buy Paragons in a desperate attempt to reach the minimum DPR required to win (meaning you need to farm like Player 3 on copious amounts of gamer chair for the first 100 or so rounds), or lose. Because of how few towers are capable of reaching the minimum DPR, most winning strategies are going to look like what I just described, with minor variation in some of the other parts. They might not have the sheer amount of debuffs I suggested, they might focus on using slightly different upgrades on the first temple upgrades prior to getting VTSG, but the reason why VTSG and Paragons are the MEAT (Most Effective Available Tactic) is because there are no alternatives. We simply don't have any other towers able to compete with these towers in terms of DPR, and that's rather frustrating. In my guide to normal Bloonarius, I recommended a lot of heroes, such as Striker Jones for MOAB Mauler spam, Churchill and Sauda for high DPS, and Benjamin for cash gain, if that's what's desired. Elite Bloonarius doesn't have this kind of deliberation for heroes. You're handicapping yourself if you don't pick Benjamin and spam banks because otherwise you miss out on huge financial gains, and since your win condition is the VTSG and Paragons, there's no other hero worth picking because none of them have enough DPR to be worth using, never mind if you have a hero like Psi who can't even hurt Bloonarius anyway. What this means is that every Elite Bloonarius run looks exactly identical, down to the heroes used. You're going to spam instas or powers, you're going to rush VTSG and Paragons, and you're going to crash your phone with how many particles are on screen. Simple as. So, I've complained a lot. Now how do we fix this? Well, for one, Elite is supposed to be a higher difficulty. Increasing health isn't by default bad, so long as it's not just a flat health increase and enjoy the next half hour of watching your defence pummel a dumb swamp blimp. Moderately boosting health (i.e. 1.5-5 times more than normal, depending on the decisions) can work out fine, but the aim of the Elite mode should be to challenge players in terms of skill, not in terms of how many Banana Farm instas they've stockpiled. So, how do we do that? Well, DOOM 2016 has a solution. In DOOM 2016, higher difficulty levels don't affect health all that much. Instead, it focuses on making enemies you face more challenging to take down. Enemies will deal increased damage, have more challenging movesets, and the player will suffer lower ammo and health gains from pickups, forcing you to try to hit every shot you make while simultaneously forcing you to dodge. Similar things could be done here. Perhaps Elite mode has Alternate Bloon Rounds enabled, or Elite Bloonarius could spawn regrow/camo bloons at higher tiers, with MOAB-class-spawns having one or even both of those properties. Bloon/MOAB speed and health could be slightly increased, so that while Bloonarius is a threat, the unique mechanic presented by it, the spawning of bloons, can present its own challenge. Bloonarius' strength lies in producing huge amounts of smaller fodder, so if the fodder becomes slightly more dangerous, it would challenge players to focus on getting both anti-Bloonarius and anti-fodder towers, rewarding players who focus on brute forcing with VTSG and Paragons just as much as those who play with other strats (i.e. Monkey Ace spam feat. Big Plane). In short, Elite Bloonarius is currently a challenge insofar as it's a challenge to reach the minimum DPR needed to beat it, but I'd rather see it be adjusted so that the rounds and summons rather than Bloonarius itself are made more intimidating, with Bloonarius buffs kept to a minimum, because spamming Benjamin/banks to get VTSG and Paragons every week sounds about as appealing to me as giving Ezili's Necromancer pierce buff an icon to show it's active is to Ninja Kiwi.
