Continuing on from last time...
Updates
(Feel free to skip this part)
Recently I managed to get hold of some card, and so I've decided to reprint the cards on card this time, which is so much nicer. They're way more solid and easier to play with, and plus... cards... card... y'know, it makes sense to print them on card.
The game itself has also seen some updates, the most notable of which is that there are now only 3 Tiers:
- Tier 1 - Base monkey
- Tier 2 - Tier 3/4 monkey (this used to be split)
- Tier 3 - Tier 5 monkey
So think of it as kind of an expanded version of the monkeys in Bloons Pop!, where you have the base monkey (Tier 1), a Mega version (Tier 3), as well as another slightly upgraded version (Tier 2). Luckily, the only monkey which had both a Tier 3 card and a Tier 4 card (I'm referring to BTD6 tiers here) was the top path Dart Monkey, which had both a Spike-o-Pult card and a Juggernaut card.
Some new rules and mechanics have been added, and of course, since I was reprinting them I also took the opportunity to balance some of the cards a bit more.
The Rules
Warning: A lotta text comin' up.
Alright, finally, let's explain how to play the game! This is gonna be complicated, and I will probably edit this section multiple times. If something's not clear, feel free to point it out in the comments and I'll edit it. Again, if you've played Yu-Gi-Oh before, this will be much easier to understand.
The Field
Both players have the same field layout.
This is where the cards are placed. If you've played Yu-Gi-Oh before, you'll notice that the layout is exactly the same. The deck is placed face down in the bottom-right corner; this is where you draw cards from. You can place both Support monkeys/bloons and Activated Abilities in the Support section. Attachments simply go under the card you're attaching them to. When monkeys/bloons are defeated/popped, when Activated Abilities expire, and when Attachments expire or the monkey/bloon they're attached to is defeated/popped, they go to the Graveyard. If a card is permanently destroyed, just place it face down in the Graveyard, to indicate that it cannot be recovered in any way. You can extend the Monkey/Bloon and Support sections to a maximum of 6 cards, although when playing with my sister we've never had to do that.
The Start
Both players start the game with 200 lives. Of course, you can change this depending on how you want to play, but 200 has worked great for us. Because my sister prefers the monkeys (as I imagine a lot of people would), whenever we play the bloons start first - just to give that little bit of extra incentive to play as the bloons - but again, you can change this if you want. Once a player loses all their lives, the game is over and the other player wins. At the start of the game, both players draw 5 cards to start off the game with.
The Turns
Each turn comprises of several stages: (they will all be explained in depth shortly)
Note: These names aren't official.
- Draw - Draw a card.
- Earn - Earn your start-of-turn cash.
- Start - Any effects that activate or deactivate at the start of the turn do so now.
- (The first 3 stages are interchangeable)
- Action 1 - Place monkeys, spawn bloons, sell cards, etc.
- Attack - Attack the opponent.
- Action 2 - Only if you attacked your opponent this turn. Same as Action 1.
- End - Any effects that activate or deactivate at the end of the turn do so now.
- Discard - If you have more than 6 cards in your hand, you must discard cards until you have 6.
Activated Abilities can be used at any time throughout the entire turn and your opponent's, however Attachments can only be used during the Action stage.
Drawing and Discarding
At the start of the turn, you draw 1 card. This is not optional. You can only have a maximum of 6 cards in your hand by the end of the turn, so if you have more than 6, you will have to discard cards until you do have 6 in your hand. These discarded cards, unlike selling (which will be explained shortly), do not pay back any sort of reward, so it's in your best interest to not have more than 6 cards in your hand.
Start-of-Turn Cash
Start-of-turn cash is your main source of income. Cash is used to place/spawn monkeys/bloons, and use more powerful activated abilities and attachments. This is where the game contains an element of Plants vs Zombies Heroes, in that the amount of cash you earn each turn increases each turn. So, on turn 1, you earn 1 cash, on turn 2 you earn 2, and so on. This allows both players to gradually start using more powerful cards and increasing the intensity of the battle.
On the very first turn, the player does not earn any start-of-round cash.
Action
The Action stage is where you do most of your stuff. During each Action stage, you can:
- Place/spawn 1 monkey/bloon.
- Sell 1 monkey/bloon.
- Use as many Activated Abilities and Attachments as you want.
- Discard as many cards as you want.
If you attack your opponent, you get a second Action stage, which obviously means you can place/spawn more monkeys/bloons, potentially giving you an advantage.
Selling
Selling is also an important aspect of the game. During the Action stage, you can sell 1 card you control, or in your hand. When you sell a card, it goes to the graveyard, and you earn cash equal to half of that card's cost, rounded up. So, if you sold a Turbo Charge ($7 cost), you would earn $4 cash back.
You cannot sell a card if it was placed or used that turn.
An important distinction between selling and discarding: when you sell a card, you get cash back; when you discard a card, you get nothing back. This is why you can only sell 1 card during the Action stage, but discard as many as you want. Selling can also be used to prevent your opponent from picking off your weaker monkeys/bloons, so this means that you can't just sell all your other weak monkeys/bloons once you place/spawn a really powerful one. And just like in BTD6, you can sell cards strategically to gain cash faster and summon other cards - like selling a BFB to summon a MOAB, which is one tactic my sister has picked up.
Battle
The most important stage. This is where you actually use the monkeys/bloons you've placed/spawned to fight. Here's how it works:
- Each monkey/bloon you control can (by default) attack one of your opponent's monkeys/bloons once.
- Therefore, the more monkeys/bloons you control, the more times you can attack.
- Certain monkeys/bloons can attack more than once.
- Certain Attachments or Activated Abilities allow monkeys/bloons to attack more than once.
- If your opponent controls no monkeys/bloons, you can attack them directly.
- This is how you actually deplete your opponent's lives and win the game.
So, to attack:
- Declare the attack. (e.g. Dart Monkey attacks Red Bloon)
- Give your opponent a chance to use any Activated Abilities to counter the attack.
- You can also use Activated Abilities to counter their Activated Ability, and so on and so forth.
- If the (popping) power of your monkey/bloon is higher than that of your opponent's, that monkey/bloon is defeated/popped.
- If they're equal, both monkeys/bloons are defeated/popped.
- If your opponent's monkey/bloon has higher (popping) power, your attacking monkey/bloon is defeated/popped. (This may seem dumb, but it can be used strategically, for example to waste a monkey/bloon's effect)
- Whoever's monkey/bloon was destroyed takes battle damage. This works the same as in Yu-Gi-Oh.
- To calculate it, all you have to do is subtract the (popping) power of the defending monkey/bloon from that of the attacking monkey/bloon.
- So if a Super Monkey (100 popping power) attacked a Pink Bloon (50 power), the Pink Bloon would be popped and the player playing as the bloons would lose 100 - 50 = 50 lives.
- And just to clarify, if you attack a stronger monkey/bloon, you do take battle damage.
- The attack is complete.
Monkeys/bloons cannot attack the turn they are placed/spawned.
Miscellaneous
- Had some but forgot, will edit once I remember.
Wow, that was long. Now for what I bet a lot of you have been waiting for - seeing some more of the cards!
Extras
A lot of you wanted to see the tiles, which had multiple cards on them, so here are some: (I will edit this post and add more as I make them)

The rest of the base monkeys and some upgraded ones
Some Monkey Attachments and Activated Abilities
Had to give the bloons 2 copies of each regular bloon, otherwise they simply wouldn't have enough cards.
Updated blimps!
And now some Tier 5/3s: (woohoo!)
