    Obyn Buff Ideas

    Posted: 08 Jun 2021 12:14 PM PDT

[Game version at the time of this post: 26.0]

Since a few updates Obyn has been in need of some balance changes. At one point he was overbuffed, and then overnerfed, making him outclassed by just about any other hero. Which I think is really a shame, as I've always liked his design as a nature-themed hero that used to be a very versatile and easy to use jack of all trades, master of none.

I came up with a few buff suggestions that could help him rise up a bit in hero rankings, and restore his versatility. This is just a collection of ideas, so not all of them would work together with others (and applying too many of them could potentially make Obyn OP), but the general 'theme' behind these buffs is to strengthen Obyn's support capabilities. Feel free to suggest other buffs in the comments.

    General

Obyn's base attack seems fine in my opinion. Its strength is early game, with its large homing projectiles that start with decent damage and ability to pop lead. However, it could do with a bit of a late game buff to make it not fall off completely.

I was wondering about Obyn's price, and it's something I'm unsure about. I'm leaning towards leaving it as it is, given that round 1 placement hero role is already filled in nicely by Quincy and Sauda, and higher cost could potentially open ways for stronger buffs.

One of Obyn's main weaknesses is RNG, so...

    • Remove all RNG aspects of him. This has been mitigated in one of the recent updates, however it's not fully removed yet, and I think it should be. Your success depending on RNG is never good in games and shouldn't be a balancing factor. Currently brambles and wall of trees are placed at the bloons if there are any in range, otherwise it's random; totems are always random.

      • Totems should be placed as close to the entrance of the track as possible within Obyn's range. Given that it's a slow effect that affects blimps, it's more useful near the start. Alternatively, closest to Obyn (just like wall of fire or bloon trap) is a good option too. If there are two lanes within his range that alternate between rounds (e.g. Chutes), totems should only be placed on the currently active lane, similar to how zombie bloons work.
      • When there are no bloons in range, brambles and wall of trees should depend on Obyn's targeting. First would place them closest to the end of the track, last closest to start etc. Alternatively, for wall of trees, let the player choose the spot on the track to have the trees placed (doesn't necessarily need to be within Obyn's range).
    • Add a bloon debuff to Obyn's main attack at later levels (13-14 and up). Given that another of his main weaknesses is that he falls off quite hard in late game, a debuff would be a significant help.

      • All MOAB class bloons hit by Obyn's main attack take +1 damage from magic monkeys for 1 second. Duration increases with Obyn's level. So basically a magic-only Glue Storm with limited range, but no ability timing required, which fits with the design of Obyn being an easy to use hero.
      • Alternatively, or perhaps together with the previous debuff, all DDTs hit by Obyn's main attack are susceptible to sharp and energy damage for 1 second. This would synergise well with AoW, which is supposed to be Obyn's main strat.

    Abilities

Obyn and Pat are the only two heroes that don't have at least one global range ability. Pat's level 3 ability and his general usefulness as a support hero make this not really that relevant, but for Obyn this could be an area to look into for potential buffs, as neither his abilities or other aspects of him are particularly strong to mitigate this weakness as opposite to Pat.

    • Brambles — currently it's a road item with one damage, sharp type, and 50 pierce, which means it can eat up 50 RBE (red bloon equivalent). It gets buffed at level 7 to 100 pierce, and at level 16 to 500 pierce, and to pop any bloon type. Which is not that much actually, considering that a regular ceramic has 104 RBE, super ceramic 68, and brambles aren't that helpful as extra damage against blimps either.

      • Add extra ceramic and MOAB damage at later levels, so it has at least noticeable impact when used.
      • Rework it so it has a similar functionality to Bloonsberry Bush from BTD5 — grows each round up to X RBE if not used up fully. Stays there indefinitely or for Y rounds if not used up fully. Only one can be on track at a given time.
    • Wall of trees — pretty much more powerful brambles that stay there indefinitely, and generate extra money when full, just like bloon trap (in CHIMPS, you get as much money as you'd get for popping caught bloons using any other means). Trees start off with 3000 pierce (which in this case is equivalent to how much RBE they can hold, like brambles), and at level 20 it's buffed to 5000. Which, again, is not that much considering that, without a freeplay multiplier (which is 1-1.4 between rounds 80-100), a single MOAB has 616 RBE and a BFB 3164 (a DDT would average to 800 as it does not appear before freeplay scaling happens). Comparing level 20 Obyn's trees to Gwen's full map firestorm, Striker's massive buff to bombs and mortars, PSI's psionic scream deleting everything below BAD, the trees really do seem significantly weaker. And what is worse, they can potentially lose you money depending on the placement — you only get the money when the trees fill up entirely, which may not happen until the end of the game. If you use the ability again, the existing wall of trees is removed and you lose everything that was in it. Edit: I misremembered it, it does give money as it should.

      • Activating the ability while another wall of trees is alredy on the track should give you the money from the contents inside. Regular cash in CHIMPS, and bonus money in other modes. This would give it much more usability without any net loss. Currently does this already, my mistake.
      • Its capacity at level 20 should be buffed (and the starting 3000 could be a bigger number too), and ideally it should scale with freeplay ramping. At round 183 5000 RBE is not enough to hold a single MOAB.

    Support

Obyn provides a bit of support to druids and other magic monkeys. His slowing totems are also a form of support, but I covered them earlier while talking about targeting. I don't think they need further changes. Currently Obyn's buffs to towers in range include:

    • +1 pierce for druids (level 2)
    • +2 pierce and +5 range for magic monkeys (level 11)
    • X-X-3+ druids start each round with the maximum speed buff provided by the tier 3 upgrade (level 18)

While the pierce buff nicely benefits druid's main attack as it only has one pierce if not crosspathed with top or buffed by other means, by the time Obyn reaches level 11, other magic monkeys are upgraded enough that the pierce buff is a lot less relevant. And currently, as of version 26.0, druid is not that strong of a tower (bottom path is good, but the rest need buffs on their own), which puts Obyn in a similar situation to Striker when bombs were basically the worst tower and mortars didn't exist.

In my opinion, Obyn would be in the ideal spot if he was the top hero choice for most magic monkeys strats.

    • The +1 pierce at level 2 should once again affect all magic monkeys, just like it did a few updates ago. It's the most relevant early game before all the upgrades adding significant pierce are bought.

    • The range buff could be increased to have more of an impact.

    • At late levels, a ceramic damage buff for all magic monkeys would be a nice addition to help with late game cleanup.

    • Given that his level 18 buffs X-X-3 druids, it could also help tier 3s from other paths.

      • Tornadoes should blow back more bloons at once or trigger more often.
      • Vines should take less time to destroy a bloon, or be able to target two bloons at once.

    TLDR;

    • RNG bad
    • Abilities weak
    • Buff to magic monkeys not good enough

You Enjoy Studying (Alchemist): Using the power of science and magic, he sprayed acid on the blonde and injected various drugs with different effects.

    PATH 1

More Drugs (Bigger Potions): Medicinal weeds instead on large areas.

Pour the Sour Cream Mixture (Acidic Mixture Dip): Throwing drugs to monkeys nearby can serve as a guide on parchment, and it can damage Moab's various pottery and flowers. Use it after a few attacks.

Bitter Beer (Berserker Brew): Additional beers provide more damage, scope and attack speed. It takes longer.

Very Powerful Stimulus (Stronger Stimulant): Of the two, the spread of beer at home affects more. It will last longer.

Forever and Ever (Permanent Brew): The Perpetual Berserker chatted with a brewery to drink it.

    PATH 2

Bailey (Stronger Acid): The beverage will dissolve in acid years earlier.

Corruption and Drugs (Perishing Potions): Drug stimulation does a lot of damage to Moab class blondes and get rid of small frozen blondes. It also strengthens boils and inflammation.

It is Not Any More Work For People to Quit (Unstable Concoction): Moab territory is acoustic with bombs.

Tonal Dates (Transforming Tonic): Transformation Ability: The Aluminum Reaction Specialist changes the monster's attack speed in 20 seconds.

Compare Them All (Total Transformation): Five monkeys went crazy and beat the monsters within 20 seconds.

    PATH 3

Play It Fast (Faster Throwing): Throw the glasses away and attack quickly.

Sour (Acid Pool): If the blonde is not allergic, it can oxidize the adjacent passages.

Maya Carroll (Lead to Gold): Turn shots into gold! Special solvents have an additional effect. Explode and make money.

Shooting (Rubber to Gold): All blue will turn to gold, giving the Pope more money from the affected blue.

The Blonde is a Good Scissor (Bloon Master Alchemist): Drugs that reduce secretion turn blondes into redheads.
