Analysis: Why are spike factories so good against DDTs?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 04:12 PM PDT

You might have noticed at some point that, while most towers will struggle to keep up with large numbers of DDTs, spike factories seem almost unreasonably effective against them. How effective? Perma-Spike can soak up seemingly unlimited DDTs, and it's possible to complete round 90 using only 2 third-tier spike factories. In this post, I will attempt to answer why this effect happens, and how it can help inform new strategies. As far as I can tell, this has never been fully analyzed.

The first question I asked was, why do other towers struggle? After all, MIB isn't that expensive late-game, and they only have 400 health, equal to a fortified MOAB. I started by formulating a concept that can be applied to nearly any tower defense game: considering a single enemy and a single tower, will the enemy escape? Assuming the tower does constant, continuous damage, then the amount of damage the enemy will take is intuitively described by:

    • The tower's damage output,
    • Multiplied by the length of the maze during which the enemy is taking damage,
    • Divided by the speed of the enemy.

By this rule, an enemy can escape if the inequality h>dr/s holds true. The speed can be moved to the other side to create a metric representing any one enemy's overall strength--here's a table of this metric applied to the outermost layers of Ceramics and up, in units of what a red bloon has:

    Bloon h*s
    Ceramic Bloon 25
    Fortified Ceramic Bloon 50
    Super-Ceramic 150
    Fortified Super-Ceramic 300
    MOAB 200
    Fortified MOAB 400
    BFB 175
    Fortified BFB 350
    DDT (BTD6) 1,100
    DDT (BMC) 1,050
    Fortified DDT 2,200
    Fortified DDT (round 99) 4,190
    ZOMG 720
    Fortified ZOMG 1,440
    Fortified ZOMG (round 97) 2,586
    BAD 3,600
    BAD (round 100) 7,056
    Fortified BAD 7,200
    Fortified BAD (round 200) 1,476,864
    Fortified BAD (round 200,135) 22,608,000,000

This should make it clear just why DDTs are so tough: while they don't have too much health, their speed puts them easily on par with ZOMGs.

This insight makes it significantly easier to answer the main question. While most towers can only fire while bloons are in range, spike factories can buffer their DPS when it goes unused and release it instantly when bloons come--no matter how fast a DDT can clear its range, if it can't use up all the spikes in place then it's not getting through.

How can this be applied elsewhere? What this shows is that spike factories are excellent against really fast bloons--for example, challenges that drag the "Bloon Speed" slider a mile off the screen. The other takeaway is, DDTs are way weaker when their speed can't help them. One of the strategies that uses this weakness (pre-emptive strike) is already widely used, but I'd like to point out a few more that a lot of players seem to miss:

    • Blooncineration: It's only really practical if you're getting it for other bloons as well, but if you have Extra Burny Stuff a single hit from this will destroy a DDT from afterburn in a matter of seconds.
    • Striker Jones: The Concussive Strike ability has a pretty respectable stun time, giving you far more time to pop them. With Ability Mastery, its cooldown at level 20 is even shorter than the stun time, meaning you can lock anything below a BAD in stun. You can also use a few MOAB Assassins and activate their abilities twice in a row with Artillery Command.
    • Ground Zero: The ability does plenty enough damage to instakill DDTs; on longer tracks, you can nuke half of round 95 at once.
    • Feel free to suggest more if you can think of them!

BONUS: You might have noticed that DDTs have a significantly higher strength in the table than ZOMGs. Does this mean that DDTs are stronger than ZOMGs? Not necessarily. Remember that the table only lists values for the outermost layer--if you include the BFB and MOAB layers, it brings it to just under 1000. ZOMGs also test your bloon popping power far more, as a single ZOMG contains more ceramic bloons than round 76. On the other hand, DDTs also require more specialized towers to damage, and you see far more of them coming at once--30 DDTs as opposed to 8 ZOMGs. So the real answer is, DDTs and ZOMGs are just about equal, and which one is technically stronger depends heavily on your strategy.
